If they do not turn in homework a third time, I will call the parent to inform them of their child not turning in homework. Dress code will be strictly enforced this year. Students must wear either a school logo shirt or a red, white, or blue Polo shirt (shirt with a collar). Any student violating the dress code will be sent to the office and parents will be notified.
Parents/guardians/relatives that volunteer in the classroom or go on field trips must have a Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card. This is a requirement statewide to ensure your child’s safety.
Progress Folders start going home today. Please sign the behavior form and return the folder by next Friday. You may keep all of the work that is in the folder.
I would like to thank all of the parents who attended “Meet the Teacher” night. I hope to have a great year (as I have great students). Look for the weekly newsletter in the Progress Folder each week.

Welcome to First Grade!
Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
My name is Beth Hernandez and I will be your child’s teacher for the 2010-2011 school year. I am delighted to have your child in my class this year. I have high expectations for each student, and I will be doing all that I can to help each student achieve success.
Now, a little about me: This will be my fifth year teaching at Liberty. I was a substitute teacher for a number of years and also a special education aide. Prior to being involved in teaching, I was in the Air Force for over 20 years. I have lived in Glendale for 15 years and enjoy most outdoor activities. I am married and have a 27-year-old daughter and 21-year-old son. I also have 6 dogs of various mixed breeds.
As far as expectations, I expect all students to respect their peers, staff, teachers, and themselves. I will be expecting all work assigned in class to be completed. Of course, all children do not work at the same pace. Some children will get their work done in class and some will not. Whether or not a child gets his or her work done in class has no effect on their grade. If your child does not complete an assignment in class, he or she will be expected to complete it at home and turn in the assignment the next day. Homework will be given everyday, Monday-Friday.
I think that learning should be fun and my goal is to have each student reach their full potential and be successful in school. If a child needs extra help with their school work, I will be available to help them. I believe that organization is essential to the learning experience. You can help by checking with your child to make sure they have their homework done and all books or materials ready the night before each school day.
Finally, I want you to know that one of the most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with you. Your help and support will not only make your child more successful in school this year, but will also instill good study habits that will last a lifetime. Please do not hesitate to contact me at school (602)442-5278 or by email: bhernandez@ltsphoenix.org
Sincerely,
Beth Hernandez

Welcome back students! We have lots of work to do to get ready for 2nd grade. So, let’s put our thinking caps back on and work hard for the rest of the year!
ATTENDANCE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS! Please make sure that your child is at school if not sick. They miss important learning opportunities when frequently absent.
I have a BLOG on the school website that can be accessed at www.ltsphoenix.org
It is generally this newsletter and the spelling words of the week.
Thanks to all parents that helped out on the field trip to Superstition Farms. We all had a fantastic time!
